This spring, we released a new video series called Meet The Masterpiece, in which our curators and team members explore highlights from the museum’s collection – works you can see at the museum anytime.
Designed to be approachable, informal and fun, the series offers a fresh perspective on our collection and the people who care for it. The idea was to speak to new audiences, adopt a more conversational tone and show our staff in their natural environment – the museum. We wanted the videos to feel relaxed, engaging and a little bit quirky. This is a series that doesn’t take itself too seriously and gives viewers something to chuckle about as well as gaining new insights into the collection. To strike that fine balance, we worked with video director Navid Razvi to develop the concept and are grateful to the Philharmonie Luxembourg for providing the music you hear in the series – a piece performed by the Luxembourg Philharmonic conducted by Gustavo Gimeno.
Cranes, grapes and whirlwind tours
In the first season, our fine arts curators take centre stage and present a range of works on display at the Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart, from Renaissance gems through to modern and contemporary pieces. Lis Hausemer, for instance, takes a closer look at Pablo Picasso‘s Paysage de Cannes au crépuscule, pointing out an unexpected detail in the lush landscape – a crane in the background of the painting –, whilst Ruud Priem takes us back to the 1530s and into the King of France’s palace to present Rosso Fiorentino’s magnificent Bacchus, Venus and Cupid, all while eating an entire plate of grapes. Archivist Edurne Kugeler also takes us on a whirlwind tour of the museum’s collection – from ancient coins and archaeological finds through to fine and decorative arts – in just a few minutes. You’ll see her running through the whole building on her ambitious quest to present all the masterpieces from the collection – quite a feat! Be sure to catch the series on Instagram or YouTube and drop by the museum to see these stunning objects in person.
What’s next?
Season 2 is already in the works and set to launch in September. This time, we’re turning our attention to the Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart’s decorative arts section, with curators Ulrike Degen and Isabelle Maas guiding us through the permanent exhibition. Also, expect a deep dive into the Musée Dräi Eechelen’s collection with arms and fortress curators Simone Feis and Ralph Lange, as well as an express tour with someone you’ll often see at the front desk of the museum welcoming visitors – our very own Nilton Almeida! Be sure to follow us on Instagram and YouTube and stay tuned for the next installment of Meet The Masterpiece – you’re in for a treat.
