The museum's art collection is primarily devoted to European painting, sculpture and photography. Beyond its conservation mission, the Fine Arts Section is chiefly engaged in expanding, studying and presenting its holdings. Its activities are complemented by the organisation of temporary exhibitions.

Composed of works from the Middle Ages to the present day, a prestigious corpus of gifts, bequests and acquisitions is regularly augmented, thereby continuing a collecting tradition that dates back to the 19th century. Carried along on a rich and distinctive journey through time, the visitor discovers masterpieces from the 13th to the 21st century across the museum's floors.
