Female Artists in the Netherlands 1900-1950

At the turn of the twentieth century, women across Europe fought for a place in the art world — not only through their work, but through the networks and associations that shaped artistic careers. Why did so many talented women artists disappear from art history, even after building serious careers? This lecture examines the opportunities and obstacles facing female artists in the Netherlands between 1900 and 1950: from art academies and artists' associations to the struggle for recognition in a male-dominated field. Art historian Karlijn de Jong explores how women organised, exhibited, and persisted, and what their stories reveal about the art world of their time.
